School of Australian Indigenous Knowledge Systems

Welcome

It is a pleasure to welcome you to our school.

The school has exclusive features for studying and research that are unique to Australia, and indeed to the world. The Northern Territory is the only place in Australia with over 25 per cent of its population being Indigenous and owning most of the landmass. Hence, the interaction with Indigenous people and communities including the understanding of Indigenous knowledge systems is an important focus of our university.

The knowledge that Indigenous peoples and communities choose to share has been handed down from generation to generation, through stories, songs, dances, ceremonies and art.

These cultural forms of expression can provide and compliment scientific knowledge, providing decision-makers with information about cultural and natural resources, systems of governance and worldviews.

On a global scale Indigenous knowledge systems can play a key role in assisting actions to ensure the sustainable use of the earth's natural resources.

The aim of the school is to prepare you for leadership roles in our society, equipping you with skills in academic areas of importance (governance, development practice, policy and resource management and Yolngu language and culture). You will learn how to apply these skills in your personal life and how to use them in the wider community.

Our qualified, experienced and enthusiastic staff as well as our partnerships with Indigenous communities, governments and other stakeholders provide you with a stimulating and supporting study environment. Offering fruitful and rewarding career opportunities.

We wish you well in your studies.
