Student Experience of Learning and Teaching (SELT)

Background

Evaluation of the student experience is an important feature of teaching and learning at Charles Darwin University. It is used to inform the design and delivery of units and courses, and as a guide to professional development in relation to individual teaching practice.

The results obtained from SELT evaluation are most effective when combined with other methods, such as student focus groups, reflective practice, peer review, teaching portfolios, and consideration of assessment results.

At Charles Darwin University academic staff provide a formal response to issues highlighted by student feedback every time a SELT unit evaluation is conducted. The aim of this is to demonstrate that student perceptions are valued and that they are used to improve student learning and staff teaching.

The SELT process

The SELT system enables you to use the standard template to create a questionnaire in pdf format with the option of including additional questions to suit your particular teaching situation and developmental needs.

The student responses are ananlysed and the results summarised and returned to Unit coordinators or lecturers by email as an easily readable pdf file. A copy of the original survey sheets is also sent to Unit coordinators or lecturers through the internal mail.

The university uses SELT evaluations to obtain student feedback on teaching and learning in both Higher Education and Vocational Education and Training sectors. Further details on conducting an evaluation are provided at the following links:
