About the Alice Springs area

Alice Springs lies close to the geographic centre of Australia, 1,500 km from the next closest city. Approximately 28,000 people live in the greater Alice area, with 20 per cent identifying as Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander.

The town is a major tourist centre due to its proximity to Uluru (Ayers Rock), which is approximately 450 km away, Kings Canyon, Palm Valley and the beautiful gorges and swimming holes of the West McDonnell Ranges. It has an Olympic sized swimming pool, 18 hole golf course (rated as one of the top ten desert courses in the world), equestrian centres, a casino and a major public hospital, which serves around a million square kilometres of Central Australia.

The Alice Springs Desert Park, about 10 minutes out of town on the road to the West McDonnells, is a popular attraction, with walk-through enclosures demonstrating the variance between different arid environments and their bird and animal populations.
