- Networking -
This is often the best way to find out about jobs before they are officially advertised. Make contact with people using the following means to make yourself known to potential employers, increase your contact base and market knowledge, and to obtain careers information:
- Attend events
- Join Professional Associations
- Talk to your co-workers
- Attend seminars
- Speak to your family members, friends and neighbours
- Join the Alumni
- Approach your Co-students, Lecturers and Tutors
- Become a volunteer
- Join a club (sporting or otherwise)
- Work Experience - Whether or not your course consists of placements and/or practical blocks it is advisable to seek work experience whilst studying. This shows employers that you are, eager to learn, are certain about your chosen field, and have hands on skills. The work may be paid or unpaid and the skills you develop will be beneficial to ongoing or potential employment. Having work experience on your resume may give you the edge over other candidates when applying for jobs.
