Which career is right for me?

The essence of trying to find the career that is right for you is to know what you are good at versus what you love to do. When you know this, you can start researching about the types of jobs available to decide whether or not they would satisfy most of your needs. Remember, there may not be a job that perfectly matches all your criteria, but one that comes close is a good bet. A simplified process may involve the following steps:

  1. Know yourself and be honest about it - your likes/dislikes, abilities;
  2. Match your profile to a job that has a good fit;
  3. Ensure that your choice of job is one that has good job prospects;
  4. Find out what the job requirements are i.e. do you need a certain level of qualification or work experience;
  5. Develop a plan on how to achieve the requirements; and
  6. Take action!

To find out more about careers visit The Job Guide which is one of the Commonwealth Government's services to help people find out about careers, education and training.

Another world standard interactive online career exploration service is myfuture.edu.au. This service is aimed at all Australians wishing to explore their career options. It does however have a particular emphasis on 16 to 24 year old students. Having opportunities to explore their skills and interests, identify their career ideas, develop their career plan and research options for further study or training.
