Graduate attributes and employability skills (generic skills)

Within the higher education sector, CDU has developed a suite of graduate attributes that align closely with the employability skills defined by DEST (Department of Employment, Science and Training), as a result of comprehensive business consultation.

Within the vocational training sector, employability skills are being given far greater emphasis in the development and review of training packages.

Student and graduate employment opportunities

This information is available online as well as displayed in the Careers area of the Information Centre. Alternatively, you can subscribe to our student-employment mailing list so that employment opportunities are sent directly to your email address. Employment notices are usually sent once a week on a Wednesday.

How do I stay competitive in the market place?

  1. Broaden your contacts in the industry - grow your network of contacts in the industry, whether or not you are in paid work. Look out for events and gatherings being held in your area and attend them.
  2. Join the university’s Alumni and stay in touch and informed with the university community.
  3. Join professional or other associations and become an active member.
  4. Keep your qualifications up-to-date - courses get reaccredited from time to time according to the needs of the profession or industry. Make sure you keep your skills and qualifications current.
  5. Subscribe to a relevant industry or professional publication - this ensures that you get the latest information about your industry or profession, and allows you to take advantage of any opportunities that may be presented.
  6. Do some volunteer work - use volunteer work as an avenue to make contacts, gain more work experience, putting something back into society as well as putting your skills and knowledge to good use.
