A Skilled Workforce for Regional and Remote Australia: Keeping, Attracting, Training

A free public forum in Alice Springs – 28 September 2007

The underlying aim of the September Symposium will be to generate discussion and debate about the ideas of workforce development, with a keen eye on various existing and future alignments of people, skills, work, structures and place.

The keynote speech by Peter Sheahan will set the scene in terms of key motivational, employment and deployment issues, with particular reference to understanding the mindsets of Generation Y.

Thereafter, the Symposium will be divided into two interrelated sections: 'The Here and Now' and 'The Future'. The former will address areas in which sound progress has been made and positive outcomes achieved. The latter will look to the future in terms of visions, goals and strategies.

Key challenges include the design and re-design of work as, for example, packages or clusters of meaningful and productive activities, accompanied by the development and matching of knowledge, skills and competencies to work in its various modes and forms.

The challenges also involve the development of safe and healthy environments and associated lifestyle opportunities, which are frequently a prerequisite for attracting and keeping talent.

About the Charles Darwin Symposia

Charles Darwin Symposia are an initiative of the Charles Darwin University/Northern Territory Government Partnership Agreement and are supported by the NT Government and the Australian National University.

The symposia are designed to encourage lively and informed debate on issues of importance to all Territorian’s. Through the symposia the University seeks to engage with the wider community, inviting members of the public to participate in the debates, airing diverse points of view, and seeking to reach understandings on the issues under scrutiny.

The organisers of the symposia invite community leaders, academics and other experts from across the nation and internationally, to address the topics that are the focus of each of the symposia.

Opportunities are provided for the public to comment, question and critique the experts, as well as presenting their own perspectives on the matters at hand.
