AN INVITATION ...

to attend the Charles Darwin Symposium Series.

The aim of the Charles Darwin Symposia discussions is simple: to create a stimulating and cutting edge debate which will enable people of differing perspectices, disciplines, professions, vocations and contexts to signpost policy and research issues relevant to managing our future.

There are four symposia in 2003, free to the public, of between 1.5 to 2 days length.

2003 Symposium Dates:

Symposium 1
North Australia in the 21st Century ........................................................21-22 May

Symposium 2

Beyond the frontier: Sustainable futures for north Australia ................17-18 July

Symposium 3
Safeguarding in an era of instability ...........................................29-30 September

Symposium 4 in Alice Springs (Araluen Centre)

Emerging futures: Shaping our community ......................................8-9 December

The Symposium Series aims to:

  • Build on the Northern Territory Economic Summit of 2001 to bring the best thinking available to bear on policy issues that could and should matter to the Territory;
  • Establish mutually influencing dialogue between the research, business and policy communities;
  • Encourage vigorous, provocative and contemporary intellectual debate among all sectors of north Australian society; and
  • Provide critical analysis of the steps for making things happen, moving from good ideas to social and economic benefits, services and programs.

Each symposium presents the work and ideas of a diverse range of international, national and Northern Territory-based researchers, public figures, government leaders and service providers. Together they and their audiences explore relevant case studies of research and policy interaction, with chaired panel discussions and public input, to think aloud about the challenges that developing the north presents.

Venue:
The symposium venue for all but the final in the series is the Mal Nairn Auditorium of the Northern Territory University, Casuarina Campus, Darwin. Symposium Four (8-9 December) will be held at the Araluen Centre in Alice Springs.

Program Structure:
Each symposium begins with a reception and keynote address, followed the next day by a full day of papers, with key themes explored and developed by invited Keynote and Plenary speakers, in round table discussions and through audience interaction.

Symposia Publications:
Each symposium will feature the release of a published summary which synthesises and
critically analyses the key themes and issues. The Charles Darwin Symposia Discussion Papers will ensure the ideas and debates reach a broader audience and continue to exert policy and public influence beyond the talks.
