Social Darwinism, history and Indigenous policy

Dr Lester-Irabinna RigneySpeaker: Dr Lester-Irabinna Rigney, Flinders University, Australia: Indigenous epistemologies and social Darwinism

Professor Lester Irabinna Rigney has received national and international recognition for his work on Indigenous research epistemologies and methodologies. He has held visiting research fellowships at various universities including Cambridge University (UK), Fort Hare University (South Africa), and the University of British Columbia (UBC) (Canada) and in 2007 held a visiting professorship at the UBC.

Professor Rigney’s publications in education, languages and knowledge transmission have drawn both national and international recognition. His 2006 co-edited book entitled Sharing Spaces: Indigenous and Non-Indigenous Responses to Story, Country and Rights, is the most up-to-date Australian text on Indigenous and non-Indigenous race relations.

He is an Adjunct Professor at both The Australian National University’s National Centre for Indigenous Studies and the Department of Educational Studies, University of British Columbia. He also sits on the Research Committee of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies.

Professor Rigney is Director of Yunggorendi First Nations Centre for Higher Education and Research, Flinders University.
