Aspiring lecturer Sandra Howlin hopes to bring a wealth of both local and international building technology and drafting experience to VET students undertaking the Cert IV in Building Technology and Drafting at CDU. Sandra studied Architectural Technology in her native country of Ireland and worked as a building designer and project manager in both Ireland and the UK before immigrating to the N.T. in 2005. Prior to this Sandra had travelled extensively around Australia and fell in love with Darwin after spending a dry season here,  Darwin was a city of growth at that time and the opportunities for a young  building designer were evident. Taking up a work sponsorship agreement as a client based project manager with local engineering company Irwinconsult, Sandra worked in the local construction industry on a wide variety of projects in both the remote and urban environment. In 2007, with the emergence new energy rating schemes for building Sandra followed her passion for Environmental Sustainable Design (ESD) and set up a new ESD department to address this emerging market need. To address the challenges of the tropical climate and heat gain on our buildings Sandra had to reduce her ESD knowledge for cooler temperature climates back to basic principles and then readapt this knowledge suit the local conditions. Along the way Sandra married a local business man and together they have an eight year old son, she in heavily involved in the local community she is currently Chairperson of Nakara Primary School Council and the Property Council ESD committee and is looking forward to assisting students on their journey into the world of building technology.
