northern territory dictionary of biography launched at the Annual History Colloquium
(November 2008)
The newly released CDU Press publication Northern Territory Dictionary of Biography. Revised Edition, edited by David Carment, Christine Edward, Barbara James, Robyn Maynard, Alan Powell and Helen J. Wilson was launched by Dr Brian Reid (Chair of the Northern Territory Heritage Advisory Council and President of the Historical Society of the Northern Territory). The launch took place at 2.30 pm on Saturday, 8 November 2008 in conjunction with the 2008 History Colloquium at the Cornucopia Museum Café, Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT), Bullocky Point. This revised edition brings together the entries from the original three volumes, published in 1990, 1992 and 1996. It is available on CD and in limited edition paperback format. More information>> |

NORTH Australian History in the Spotlight at the Annual History Colloquium
(November 2008)
Australian history and cultural events will be explored at the annual History Colloquium in Darwin on Saturday 8 November 2008. The event is jointly organised each year by Charles Darwin University, the Australia National University and the Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory, and offers insights into a broad range of historical subjects by experts in their field. The Colloquium is a free weekend event, held at the theatrette in the Museum and Art Gallery.

Breakfast Launch for new CDU Press volume on timor-leste

The new CDU Press title Democratic Governance in Timor-Leste: Reconciling the Local and the National edited by David Mearns was launched by The Speaker of the Legislative Assembly of the Northern Territory, The Honourable Jane Aagard MLA at a breakfast function held in the Strangers Dining Room of the Northern Territory Parliament at 8.00 am on Friday 31 October 2008. His Excellency, The Ambassador for Timo-Leste, Hernani Coelho da Silva was in attendance. The volume contains papers from a conference that was held at Charles Darwin University in February 2008. Contexts of Child Development launched in canberra

The latest CDU Press release, Contexts of Child Development: Culture, Policy and Intervention, edited by Gary Robinson, Ute Eickelkamp, Jacqueline Goodnow and Ilan Katz, was launched at Parliament House in Canberra on 1 September 2008. The function opened at 10.30 am by Mick Gouda, Chief Executive Officer of the Cooperative Research Centre for Aboriginal Health. The Guest Speaker was the Hon Maxine McKew MP, Member for Bennelong, and the Editor's Response was given by Gary Robinson, School of Social and Policy Research, Charles Darwin University. Contexts of Child Development is an inspiring and thought-provoking collection that aims to deepen our understanding of child development in order to positively influence the people, policies and practices that help shape children’s lives. Sydney Launch at Gleebooks A second launch took place at Gleebooks in Sydney on 26 September from 6.00 pm. The MC was Prof Ilan Katz from the Social Policy Research Centre of the University of New South Wales. The Special Guest Speaker was Prof Mick Dodson from the Australian National University in Canberra. changes on the CDU PRESS EDITORIAL BOARD

CDU Press is happy to announce that Professor Wendy Brady, from CDU's School of Australian Indigenous Knowledge Systems, has taken on the job of Chair of the CDU Press Editorial Board.
The Board recently farewelled Associate Professor David Mearns, who stood down from the Chair. CDU Press wishes David all the best for his future endeavours and thanks him for the devoted service he has put in to the Press for the past two years.
There have been a number of other changes to the membership of the Editorial Board for 2008, with two other members leaving and six new members coming ‘on board’.
CDU Press wishes to thank both Lynda Prior (from the School for Environmental Research) and Kate Senior (from the Menzies School of Health Research) for their valuable contributions of time and efforts for the Board. Both are also leaving due to other commitments.
Gill Ainsworth has taken over as representative from the School of Environmental Research and Richard Chenhall will now be representing Menzies.
CDU Press is glad to once again have members based in the School of Social and Policy Research. The two new members from that area are Shane Thamm and Rolf Gerritsen, who is based in Alice Springs. The Editorial Board also welcomes Lesley Barclay, Director of the Graduate School of Health Research, and Elizabeth Foggo-Thynne, from Learnlink as new members.
The Board is very happy to have increased its membership from various areas within the University, as it aims to have as broad a representation as possible.

Communication is the cornerstone to success at uni and work

Communication is the theme of two foundation texts featured by Charles Darwin University Press this week.
The volumes instruct on the communication and presentation skills required to succeed at university and in a work environment.
The first volume, Information Communication Technology at University: Skills for Success, aims to ensure that students have a good foundation in the use of information communication technology.
The text, by CDU senior lecturer in Education, Professor Greg Shaw, helps students to gain skills and understanding of the Internet, including Internet research and the use of email.
It aims to teach the necessary skills for both students and working professionals for researching and producing written and oral presentations.
It also guides students through the process of producing assignments and reports using a word processor, and instructs on the use of presentation and spreadsheet software. More information >>
The second volume, Communicating at University: Skills for Success by Nicola Rolls and Peter Wignell, provides comprehensive information on writing in an academic style for students in any field in higher education.
This is the second edition of the text and offers guidance on editing for correct grammar, punctuation and conciseness as well as verbal communication and presentation techniques. The authors are experts in the fields of applied linguistics and academic literacy and are actively engaged in related teaching and research at CDU.
New book paints range of futures for tropics

A new publication examining the future of tropical Australia has been released by Charles Darwin University Press.
The publication identifies 10 major drivers that will shape the north and describes seven possible outcomes.
Future Options for North Australia, by Stephen Garnett, John Woinarski, Rolf Gerritsen and Gordon Duff, was launched by the Honourable John Kerin, Chair of the Board of Management of the Tropical Savannas Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) at the Savanna Futures Forum held at CDU’s Casuarina campus on 28 February 2008.
Mr Kerin was enthusiastic about the volume, noting the relevance of the topic of northern development and his expectation that this volume should be a valuable resource for policy makers.
The authors, all of whom have a close association with the Tropical Savannas CRC, assert they are not making predictions, but rather are presenting scenarios to make readers think about and realise that decisions made today will have a profound influence in the future.
They describe seven possible scenarios for the future of the north: chronic underdevelopment, degeneration, a northern rice bowl, an industrial powerhouse environment first, an Indigenous community Utopia or dynamic urbanisation.
The publication suggests that, unlike the rest of the world where the future largely has been set by unplanned development and the irrevocable contingencies of history, northern Australia can be moulded by deliberate and considered choices.

The launch was held as part of the Savanna Futures Forum which was held at CDU's Casuarina Campus on 28 February 2008. The launch took place from 12.50 to 1.50 pm in the foyer of the Mal Nairn Auditorium.
NT Administrator launches two CDU Press publications

The Administrator of the Northern Territory, Mr Tom Pauling recently visited Charles Darwin University’s Casuarina campus to launch two recent volumes published by CDU Press: The Crisis in Timor-Leste: Understanding the Past, Imagining the Future, edited by Dennis Shoesmith, and the new edition of The Shadow’s Edge: Australia’s Northern War by Alan Powell.
The Administrator said he was extremely impressed at the depth of research involved with Professor Powell’s new edition, which has been punctuated with many anecdotes and personal accounts of World War II.
He noted key themes in the book including the role Indigenous people played in the war effort and Darwin’s 13th squadron.
“I congratulate the author of The Shadow’s Edge for presenting us with such an excellent history that stands alongside his other valuable publications,” Mr Pauling said.
In addressing Associate Professor Shoesmith’s collection of papers, Mr Pauling fittingly described them as “agonisingly poignant and timely”. The book chronicles the historical, social and political causes of unrest in Timor-Leste.
He also noted the importance of the Timor-Leste conference held at CDU's Casuarina campus last week and events which have since transpired.
“In my view, the events of Monday make careful study of this collection essential reading. It would be very unwise for policy makers concerned with Timor-Leste to ignore this splendid work,” he said. “It is vital that we better understand our near neighbour, its current development and democratic progress.”
Mr Pauling noted the importance of the work of CDU researchers in the areas of north Australian history and the Territory’s links with its near neighbours. Further, he acknowledged the role that CDU Press plays in publishing such key volumes.

CDU Hosts international conference on Democratic Governance in Timor Leste
Charles Darwin University, in conjunction with the Australian National University and the Timor Institute of Development Studies, will host an international conference entitled Democratic Governance in Timor Leste: Reconciling the Local and the National on 7 and 8 February 2008.
This conference follows the successful one-day symposium of November 2006 and the subsequent book, The Crisis in Timor-Leste: Understanding the Past, Imagining the Future, recently published by CDU Press.
The 2008 conference will focus on how the process of ‘nation building’ might be envisaged given the international, national and local expectations that press upon the Timor Leste Government and parliament.
