Primary Industries and Children's Services (Central)

The Primary Industries and Children's Services (Central) team cover a broad spectrum of industry sectors and offer vocational training in horticulture, agriculture, conservation and land management, children’s services, community services, education support and first aid.

All programs are offered at the Alice Springs campus and select programs at our regional centres Tennant Creek and Yulara. The team also consists of experienced remote lecturers that are dedicated to deliver on-the-ground training in remote communities.

  • SMARTtrain Chemical Accreditation Program

Horticulture: Horticultural training is available to all students who wish to pursue a career in the horticulture industry ranging from amenity to production. The qualifications may cover skills in landscaping, turf, nursery production, parks and gardens and production horticulture.

Rural operations: Rural operations services several industry sectors, as well as a wide range of jobs and roles that are part of the broader agricultural industry. Many agricultural enterprises include two or more production sectors. For example, although there is a trend to specialisation, many farms still combine animal production with cropping and/or fruit and vegetable production. Rural operations covers all levels of work from inexperienced new entrants to the industry, to skilled operators, supervisors and managers.

Agriculture: Students undertaking the stock and station skills course will graduate with the qualification Certificate II in Agriculture. This is a physically demanding course. Students must be fit, active and able to function effectively in a tropical environment. We are seeking people with a strong work ethic, an optimistic approach to life and a desire to continually improve themselves. Students must be at least 15 years old on the day of enrolment and have basic literacy and numeracy skills. A strong desire to work in the rural industry is also important.

Conservation and land management: The Conservation and Land Management Training Package provides national career pathways at all levels of employment associated with natural resource management. This course is appropriate for people working on revegetation projects, animal rescue, maintenance of natural areas and assisting with park management.

Children’s services: Children’s services provides training to use organisational policies, procedures and individual children’s profiles to plan activities and provide care to children, facilitating their leisure and play and enabling them to achieve their developmental outcomes.

Education support: The Certificate IV in Education Support is a practically oriented course which will enable students who complete the program to provide support to teachers. Such as:

  • Inclusion support assistant
  • Teachers assistant
  • Education support worker
  • Part-time instructors
  • Governess
  • Tutor
  • Out of school hours carer
  • Sunday school teacher

Employment opportunities will be reflected in the units of competency chosen by the student. Electives may also be selected for individuals working in early intervention support or high needs settings.

Community services: This qualification is an entry pathway into community services work such as childcare, education support, out of school hour’s care, foster career, playgroup facilitator, etc.
