Shifting control - strategies to support clients to take greater control over their health care

  • increase opportunities for patients and families to participate in service planning and management
  • increase patient control over interactions: e.g. the topics, the language used, the participants, the time and the place
  • identify and respond to the priorities of patients and their families
  • provide access to meaningful information in the patient's preferred language utilising effective communication strategies
  • create opportunities for staff and Indigenous patients/ interpreters / healthworkers to work together to develop a shared understanding about their perspectives and practices
