Key encounter 3: a medical review with a stable patient.

The effectiveness of communication - and extent of shared language - was overestimated by all participants in this encounter.

The client's attempts to respond even when she did not understand masked the extent of communication difficulty that was occuring

  • most instances of miscommunication were unrecognised and/or unrepaired.

The use of a range of good communication strategies was still insufficient to achieve adequate shared understanding about key concepts.

The absence of an interpreter severely restricted the potential for effective communication as participants shared very little common language or cultural knowledge.
