Memorandum of Understanding between Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education and Charles Darwin University

Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Batchelor Institute of Indigenous Tertiary Education (BIITE) have a Memorandum of Understanding for collaboration in place that will enrich Indigenous tertiary education in the Territory.

The Memorandum has four main objectives:

  • Collaboration between the Territory’s two tertiary education providers;
  • Service delivery designed to achieve optimal tertiary education outcomes for Indigenous people;
  • The development, modelling and sharing of best practice in teaching and learning across higher education and vocational education and training; and
  • Research on Indigenous matters.

Each institution brings different strengths to the joint activities and this is one of the advantages of collaboration. This agreement is based on mutual respect and cooperation, with the aim of minimising duplication and maximising opportunities for Indigenous people.

Collaborative projects underway

Under the MOU four collaborative projects were funded by Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations, most of which have been completed.

Academic ‘Pathways’ Identification Project

This project aims to provide flexible pathways for Indigenous students to move within, between and across the VET and higher education sectors in Batchelor Institute and Charles Darwin University (CDU). This will allow students to have access to a greater range of study options than either institution can provide on its own. In addition, the project will also improve the quality and delivery costs of courses for both institutions by allowing each institution to focus on its particular strengths, and thus reduce unnecessary duplication.

Access to Capital Infrastructure Project

The goal of this project is to improve delivery of education to Indigenous people throughout the Northern Territory by maximising shared use of the existing infrastructure facilities of Charles Darwin University (CDU) and Batchelor Institute as well as Northern Territory Department of Employment Education and Training (NT DEET).

Education Course Accreditation and Cross-Reference Project

This project which focuses on processes for collaborative program development and delivery, evolved from the requirement for Batchelor Institute and Charles Darwin University (CDU) to reaccredit their higher education teaching degrees. To undertake this process, Batchelor Institute and CDU education lecturers are working together to share expertise and resources and have identified a number of opportunities for collaboration in this task. Thus, through the reaccreditation of their respective education courses the two institutions have been able to identify those areas where they can share expertise and enhance each other’s program delivery.

Systems Alignment Project

The major outcome sought from this project is more efficient use of the student management system (SMS) currently in use in Batchelor Institute and Charles Darwin University (CDU). This is to be achieved by developing specified upgrades so as to utilise the SMS without duplication of effort and at a reduced cost. The project will also result in greater efficiency as each institution will operate using similar systems so that student transition from one institution to another will be more flexible and cost effective.
