Community Garden Project
The community garden project has moved into the community arena. Check out the Lakeside Drive Community Garden website for updates or to get involved. Read below to find out how the community garden project began with the ideas and enthusiasm of CDU Talloires students.
With a one year waiting list for the nearby Jingili Community Garden, Talloires members were determined to establish a garden at CDU that could be used by students and the local community.
After almost a years worth of Talloires students putting in the hard work laying the foundations for the garden - the community were invited to a Visioning Day to share their ideas for the garden. The project is now a combined student, university and community project and you can find out more here.
The CDU Talloires Community Garden Project provides students with the chance to gain experience in a real world project that involves development of graduate attributes such as:
- Teamwork
- Communication skills
- Leadership skills
And enables students the opportunity to gain knowledge relevant to the courses they are studying (e.g. business planning, community liaison, environmental management).
CDU Talloires also foresees strengthened university-community links through the establishment of a garden. This is in line with the Talloires Declaration (.pdf) and CDU’s vision to make the university a more open and welcoming place, which contributes to community engagement.
CDU Talloires hopes to expand capacity through partnerships with community organisations and businesses believing that these community partnerships will enhance the success and benefits of the Community Garden Project. Groups such as Food Care NT and local businesses in the community have shown support for the garden.
CDU Talloires is guided by a philosophy of environmental sustainability and are very excited about the community garden project.
