School leaver
School leavers with an NTCE but no TER meet the minimum admission requirements for most Vocational Education and Training (VET) courses at Charles Darwin University. These courses range from certificate I level courses to advanced diplomas. Most NTCE students will be eligible to start from a certificate III or IV level course, but always check the admission requirements section of the course you are interested in for the exact requirements.
School leavers with a TER score can apply for either a VET level course or a higher education bachelor's degree course. All Northern Territory school leavers with a TER score are encouraged to apply for the course/s of their choice, regardless of how they think they may perform in their final year exams. This is because CDU offers a bonus points scheme for local students, which will assist many borderline students to meet the admission requirements into a bachelor's degree program. Students apply online with the South Australian Tertiary Admission Centre (SATAC) and can nominate up to six courses of study in order of preference, from first to last. This means that if you miss out on a place for your first preference, you will be assessed for a place for your second preference and so on.
If you do not meet the admission requirements for any of the courses that you want to apply for, you will need to consider one of the options for minimum admissions requirement for a CDU course.
Mature age entry
- If you have been out of study or work for a long period of time, our Tertiary Enabling Program will assist you to get back into the habit of study (essay writing, computing skills, taking notes) and is also tailored to meet the basic knowledge requirements of the course you will undertake. This bridging program only takes one semester full-time to complete (or two semesters part-time), and will meet the minimum entry requirements to most of Charles Darwin University's bachelors degree level courses.
- If you do not have Year 10 or Year 12 level of education but have work and/or life experience, speak to the course coordinator of the course you are interested in undertaking. They will assess you usually through a face-to-face meeting and advise you accordingly. Contact Student Services on 08 8946 7766 or 1800 061 963 to find out the name and contact details of the relevant course coordinator.
- For other options available to you, please view minimum admissions requirement.

Indigenous student
Charles Darwin University's Indigenous Academic Support Unit assists Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students with all aspects of their study needs, including mapping a study pathway.
Bridging courses for Indigenous students are available for those students interested in studying law, humanities and social sciences or business. These intensive programs are offered over the December-January period each year and are aimed at preparing Indigenous students for successful study at tertiary level.
Person with a disability or special needs
CDU has a Disability Support Officer available in our Support & Equity Services division. Together with the Disability Support Officer, a student advisor from the Careers & Employment team can assist a person with a disability or special needs to map a pathway for study at our university.
