Style Guide for Web Authors
General best practice guidelines
Page design
- Be consistent with the current layout found throughout the website as this allows for easier and faster navigation.
Tables
- Unless necessary, tables should not be used for layout
- Data tables must have appropriate header and id attributes.
Links
- Incorporate text descriptions with graphical links
- Avoid using 'Click here' and/or 'Click on the link below'
- Make links descriptive, for example: 'Download the Visitor's Guide for more information on CDU'.
Images
- Use descriptive 'alt' tag for all images that is meaningful to the viewer, for example use 'Charles Darwin University ' instead of 'logo'
- Do not use flashing, flickering, blinking or moving images as this distracts the user from the information
- Use high contrast images so that people with visual disabilities including colour blindness, can easily see these images
- All images should be modified for the web.
Colour
- Web safe colours should be used, however except for photos and graphics, only CDU corporate web safe colours are to be used, these are: Black = #000000, Red = #CC0000, Greys = #CCCCCC, #666666, #999999
- Use contrasting colours so that these colours can be easily seen by people with visual disabilities including colour blindness
- Use Hex code for colours and not names for example '#FFFFFF' instead of 'white'.
Text
- Do not use phrases such as 'click here' - Don't 'click here': writing meaningful link text (www.deyalexander.com.au)
- Do not use flashing, flickering, blinking or moving text
- Do not refer to items in colour (i.e. 'refer to the pink bulleted items')
- Expand abbreviations and acronyms for the first occurrence on each page
- Contrast text colours with background colours
- Link names should be as close as possible (if not the same as) the heading of the page it is linking to.
Other
- Divide large blocks of information into more manageable groups where natural and appropriate
- Use links that take to view back to the top of the page where appropriate.
