Humanities & Social Sciences
The study of humanities and social sciences is central to the creation and transmission of new knowledge about our world. This is vital for the development of our future society, culture and individual identity.
The Bachelor of Arts provides a broad range of study options including anthropology, history, Indonesian, Greek and Chinese studies, political science and sociology. Through the exploration of human society, students learn how to think creatively and critically, to analyse and to speculate, thus gaining insight into the human race and its culture.
The course makes use of Darwin’s unique location in northern Australia, adjacent to Southeast Asia, to build strengths in Indigenous and regional studies, with a growing focus on eastern Indonesia and East Timor. Specialist pathways of study are available in History and Cultural Heritage, in Social Science (Psychology and Sociology), in Regional and International Studies (including Southeast Asian Studies), Languages and in Indigenous Knowledge (Yolngu). Combinations of these specialist areas of study provide graduates with distinctive qualifications that lead to interesting and rewarding careers.
Students also have the option for research study at Honours or postgraduate levels. Combined degrees are also available.
