Language Studies

Studying a new language provides opportunities and skills to explore and engage with different cultures and societies. Opportunities exist to study Indonesian, Modern Greek and Mandarin at Charles Darwin University in undergraduate and postgraduate courses.

Acquired language proficiency and intercultural awareness skills open doors to a wide range of employment opportunities in areas such as teaching and education, foreign affairs, armed forces and security agencies, tourism and hospitality, international commerce, law, management and development, government, business, travel, medicine, environmental sciences, engineering, journalism and overseas consultancy.

Students also have the option of attending in-country programs in China, Indonesia and Greece. In-country study provides students with further opportunities to immerse themselves in the culture of their chosen country.

Indonesian Studies

Indonesia is the world’s fourth most populous country and is rich with a diversity of cultures. Being at our doorstep, Indonesia is central to Australia’s long-term strategic and economic interests. Studies in Indonesian language, culture and society will enhance students’ capacity to engage with Indonesia and Indonesian nationals.

Indonesian language units are offered on campus, externally (online) and in-country. Refer to Indonesian In-Country (Lombok) for comprehensive information on the summer intensive in-country program in Lombok. Refer to Indonesian In-Country (Yogyakarta) for information about the semester long program in Yogyakarta.

Modern Greek Studies

Modern Greek is offered at CDU with assistance from Flinders University and the Greek Orthodox Community of the Northern Territory.

The study of Modern Greek language and culture provides the key to understanding the importance of the Hellenic tradition in western intellectual development and its contribution to multicultural Australia. The units are suitable not only for students who have a Greek background but also for students with limited or no previous knowledge of Modern Greek. Refer to Modern Greek Info. An in-country program is run annually in July, giving students the opportunity to immerse themselves in Greek language and culture. For more information, refer to Greek In-Country.

Chinese Studies

Mandarin is an official language of the People’s Republic of China. It is spoken by millions of people worldwide and ranks as the most widely spoken language in the world. It has a five thousand year old culture that has made a major impact throughout the world with increasing international importance for business and economics in the 21st century.

In September 2009, the Chinese In-Country Language Program was launched in partnership with Hainan University in Haikou, China. For more information, refer to Chinese In-Country.
