Crosscurrents: History, society and identity
In recent years debates surrounding colonial encounters, cross-cultural exchange and minority histories have taken centre stage in postcolonial studies in Australia and internationally. As part of this process the focus of debate has moved to pluralistic multi-disciplinary approaches using new theoretical frameworks.
Crosscurrents brings together a number of projects that embody these approaches and frameworks. The projects pay particular attention to the diversity of human identities in North Australia and Southeast Asia. They aim to assist greater understanding of the forces that have shaped societies in the region, how these societies’ futures might develop and appropriate options for influencing the future.
All projects explore fertile interconnections between different disciplines, especially anthropology, archaeology, the social studies of technology, art history, history and political science. They utilise a wide range of historical and contemporary source materials to bring together written records, fieldwork, visual imagery and new technologies.
