Welcome to the Centre for Youth Music (CYM), the place where children learn to play music, and adults participate in non-award courses.

The Charles Darwin University Centre for Youth Music, established in 1990, provides comprehensive and integrated individual tuition, ensemble and orchestral training for young musicians and has become a leader in the provision of programs for young musicians in the Northern Territory.

These programs include individual instrumental tuition, speech and drama, group keyboard classes, vocal development, music theory, contemporary music, and a variety of training ensembles for students who play orchestral instruments, recorder and guitar.

In addition, there is also a Junior Music Program for children as young as three years old, and the Advanced Chamber Music Ensemble and the Darwin Youth Orchestra for more advanced orchestral players.

Most ensemble programs are conducted on a Saturday at the Casuarina campus of the Charles Darwin University. Individual lessons are held after school hours during the week and on Saturday.

Participation in the ensemble or orchestral training program enables students to develop the wide range of skills needed to perform effectively with other musicians. It also provides an excellent forum for the development of musical and instrumental knowledge as well as increasing performance confidence.

All lessons are conducted by leading Darwin musicians and teachers who have had a wide range of performance and teaching experience.

Tuition and ensembles take place at the CYM, which is part of the Charles Darwin University Music building, Building 16, Casuarina Campus, and at the Palmerston Campus where there are Junior Music Programs Guitar, Voice and Keyboard Classes.
