About Driver Education and TrainingDriver Education at CDU

Driver Education and Training delivers driver and driver instructor training, as well as licence upgrade tests, across the Northern Territory. The program also provides remote communities with culturally appropriate materials to help them deliver their own programs and road safety messages.

The aim of Driver Education and Training is to increase the number of licensed drivers in rural and remote areas and combat, through education, the unacceptably high number of Aboriginal people involved in road accidents.

Driving instructor training

Community-based driving instructors must successfully complete four out of the mainstream qualification's eight modules. This allows them to teach in their own community. If they wish to teach in the mainstream, community-based instructors may complete the other eight modules and gain the Certificate IV in Road Transport Instructor Training. The mainstream qualification is also offered by Driver Education and Training.

Licence upgrades

Driver Education and Training also oversees licence upgrades and tests for bus and truck licences in remote areas, alleviating reliance on the police and Motor Vehicle Registry. Provision is made for varying levels of literacy and English as a second language.
