Assessment in community service's courses

Assessment is a national process. CDU's assessment processes ensure that individuals (sometimes called the assessee or training participant) are assessed against set national standards to gain part or a whole qualification.

The qualifications standards developed through consultation with the children’s services industry. CDU's standard units are packaged together around specific units and are part of the National Community Services Training Package. These are the Children’s Services Competency Standards.

The qualifications available through CDU from these standards are:

What if I want my current skills and experiences recognised?

If you want your current skills and experiences recognised, you can apply for RPL/RCC. Recognition of Prior Learning or Recognition of Current Competency is an assessment process. With RPL/RCC skills and knowledge gained in work or other settings can be recognised. Competency simply means "I can do it". To be assessed you will have to collect and present evidence of the things you can do. Assessment can sometime occur at your workplace and is called "workplace assessment".

Your skills and knowledge may have been developed through:

  • Workplace
  • Voluntary work
  • Previous training through workshops
  • Relevant life experiences.

These are all relevant to applying for assessment.

Resources to assist you with assessment

There are many resources to assist you with information about assessment and what is required to be assessed against individual units of competency, and whole qualifications.

If you are attending a class your lecturer will provide a unit outline for each course which sets out all the assessment requirements to complete the unit.

CDU assessment support materials

You can ask your lecturer for copies of CDU assessment support materials. The university has assessment booklets for all qualifications and units of competency within our training package.

Additional information and case studies of assessment can be downloaded from the Northern Territory children’s services assessment website.

As part of assessment you are required to provide evidence of your skills and knowledge to our assessors.

How much will RPL/RCC or workplace assessment cost?

In the VET sector RPL is assessed according to a standard cost. This is set by the university to cover the cost of the RPL process. Currently the cost is $1.00 per competency hour. RPL costs do not apply in the higher education sector. You must enrol to be assessed for RPL/RCC.
