The DR of Congo is
in central Africa. It has a land mass 30%
that of Australia or about the same size as
WA. The capital is Kinshasa located in the
south west of the country. The population of
the DR of Congo is 60 million people, three times
that of Australia.
French is the Congo's official
language, but it is spoken by relatively few
people. Swahili is widely used in the east, and Lingala is spoken in the west; Tshilaba is also
common.
During Motabi’s rule from 1971-1997
the country was named Zaire. In 1997 it
returned to its former name the Democratic
Republic of Congo.
It’s biggest exports are diamonds,
copper, crude oil, coffee and cobalt. And it
imports foodstuffs, mining and other machinery,
transport equipment and fuels.
The DR of Congo lies across the
equator. The landscape of the DR of Congo
includes lush plateaus and national parks with
water ways.
In recent years the DR of Congo has
been experiencing civil
unrest.
