Career opportunities

For those who would like to study psychology but do not intend on becoming a registered practicing psychologist, your interest can be pursued in the Bachelor of Behavioural Science or the Bachelor of Arts degrees.

The Bachelor of Behavioural Science is aimed at providing students with a foundation in psychology, and leads to advanced study in a number of areas in psychology in the Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Honours) degree. The acquisition of a multiplicity of skills and the knowledge in other areas of psychology (e.g. social, community, developmental) makes the Bachelor of Behavioural Science a very suitable first-degree requirement for entry into other occupations.

Membership requirements of the APS

The Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Honours) is a fourth year degree, which will satisfy the minimum requirement for entry into a masters by coursework or PhD program in psychology.

As of 2000, completion of both a four-year psychology degree and two-year masters degree or PhD is required for membership with the Australian Psychological Society (APS). In the Northern Territory registration requires the fourth-year degree plus two years supervision. Registration is transferable between states and territories.

The Australian Psychological Society is the national body through which the interests of both the science and profession of psychology are represented. It is the main organisation to which psychologists in Australia belong and has 5,000 members. Fully qualified members have the right to use the initials MAPS. The purpose of the APS is to advance psychology as a science, as a profession and as a means of promoting human welfare by encouraging the practice of psychology in all its facets and to the highest standards.
