Commonwealth Funded Scholarship Schemes

Funded through the Department of Health & Ageing and Office of Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Health.

Royal College of Nursing, Australia (RCNA) currently administers five Commonwealth Funded Scholarship Schemes mostly targeted to nurses or nursing students who are living in rural and remote areas of Australia. Preference in the eligibility criteria and /or ranking process is normally given to those applicants who undertake to both study and complete clinical experiences in regional, rural and/or remote areas. The intention of all the Schemes is to increase the pool of nurses in remote and rural areas of Australia.

Application Pack

All scholarships have an information pack. Generally the pack includes an Application Form and a Guidelines Form (including eligibility criteria), as well as a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) document. Where required, additional documentation and information is included in information packs posted to potential applicants. A sample completed Application Form is made available on the web and in hard copy on request, i.e. hard copies are not routinely posted out. Documents included in the information packs can also be downloaded from this web site.

Calls for Application

At the time of calls for applications, advertisements are placed in major metropolitan daily newspapers and approximately 450 regional and rural newspapers, in Nursing Review and via RCNA's electronic Networkers (e.g. Leadership Networker and student network). A Press Release is produced and faxed to the media (print, radio & television) and other key organisations, eg key nursing organisations, industry groups and politicians.
