The Undergraduate Training and Research Opportunity Program (UTROP) is an educational scheme designed to give undergraduate students an opportunity to participate in research projects run by Charles Darwin University's Faculty of Engineering, Health, Science and the Environment(EHSE).
Agreements made by senior staff at the Australian National University (ANU) and Charles Darwin University (CDU) mean that ANU undergraduate students can participate in this program, which for ANU students has been rebadged as ANUTROP.
Participation in ANUTROP gives ANU students the opportunity to engage in research internships during the wet season from late November to early February (summer break).
The ANUTROP process is managed by the Faculty of EHSE’s Research and Postgraduates Office, located in Blue 4.1.12.
Some of the benefits of ANUTROP program participation include:
Enjoying the challenges of being part of a research team
Developing knowledge in research design and associated techniques
Potential to contribute to publications
Creating future job opportunities
Enhancing the possibility of gaining a scholarship for a research degree
Potential to contribute to publications
Visiting Australia's tropical Top End
The following basic conditions apply to ANU students participating in the ANUTROP program:
Travel costs between Darwin and your home in Australia are covered by CDU
A student stipend
Full board and accommodation
Two projects are available for 2010 over the wet season
Detailed project specific conditions can be found in the individual project descriptions.
Two projects are available for 2010 over the wet season. The two projects involve the biology of marine turtles at Scott reefs and involve a boat trip of slightly more two weeks duration from Broome to the reef.
The total duration of the turtle projects are about four weeks. There is some OHS training (learning to escape from helicopters underwater) that will be given in December prior to commencement of the expedition to Scott Reef.
In order to be eligible for a ANUTROP program you should normally have completed the second year of your undergraduate degree by the time the scholarship starts.
The application form to participate in one of the ANUTROP projects is attached as a PDF file. Closing date for applications is 16 October 2010.
You should contact the project supervisor before submitting an application. A reasonable level of fitness is needed for the turtle projects at Scott reef. Please contact Dr Michael Guinea T: 8946 6707
