Discovering Tropical Birds

Upcoming programs:

  • 7-12 July 2008
  • 6-11 October 2008

Have you always wanted to view nature at its best? Now is the time to do it with the unique Discovering Tropical Birds program launched by Charles Darwin University (CDU).

This six day program combines study and travel to provide visitors to the Northern Territory and bird enthusiasts alike, the opportunity to experience and learn more about birds and other wildlife of the monsoon tropics. The Top End is a birdwatcher's paradise, boasting almost half of the bird species found in Australia and many that occur only in the tropics.

A two day package (days one and two) is also available and includes the theory component to learn about the birds of the monsoon tropics and also experience the local birding around Darwin up close.

Magpie Geese and other waterbirds congregate in their thousands on shrinking billabongs as they wait for the first rains of the wet season to fall. You can see several species of finches found only in the tropical savannas, including the Gouldian Finch, widely acclaimed as the most colourful bird in the world.
