Course Annual Review

As you know, we have implemented a course annual review process this year. The quality of each course should be underpinned by an annual review of the teaching and learning within the course. The conduct of this review is the responsibility of the course coordinator. The key goal of the annual course review is to improve the quality of teaching and learning at the course and unit levels. As such, it is concerned with what is working, and what is not and how the course can be improved.

The course annual review should include consideration of SELT assessments, timetabling, assessment requirements and processes, moderation, Course Advisory Group views and internal, professional accreditation and marketing information. The annual course review should provide the opportunity for all staff members in a discipline to plan ahead and contribute effectively to these processes. Course annual reviews are an ideal opportunity to summarise key issues and concerns to the next Course Advisory Group (CAG) meetings.

Each disciplinary grouping should include consideration at course and unit level as follows

 At the unit level

  • Identify strengths and weaknesses of each unit with respect to assessment, timetabling, logistics, student concerns/complaints
  • Consider how the content of the unit fits with the overall course
  • What, if any adjustments need to be made to units and what are the implications of any adjustments for students, and staff, administration,
  • Planning for subsequent teaching of this unit (timetabling, resourcing etc)

At the course level

  • The functioning of the course overall
  • Difficulties that are causing concern fro students, staff and/or      administration
  • Trends for enrolment
  • Strategies and plans for the coming enrolment period (student enquiries, advertising and promotion)
  • Administration requirements for the course (what is needed? How will they be handled? Etc)
  • Accreditation requirements and plans
  • Resources required
