Access and English as a Second Language

Ms Birut Zemits
Birut is the Teaching and Learning Champion in the Centre for Access and English as a Second Language (CAESL). Her qualifications include Masters in Environmental Education, Graduate Diploma in Applied Linguistics, Graduate Diploma in Teaching (Primary) and Bachelor of Arts (Education Studies). She is an IELTS examiner and enjoyed working as a high school teacher in the Northern Territory before joining the faculty.
Birut’s key teaching areas are English for speakers of other languages, sociolinguistics, common units and Ethnographic Film.
Current activities include:
- Participation in the national Carrick moderation project
- Producing Video/DVD support learning materials for university courses.
- Research for PhD – Ethno-Eco-Dialogue: Making media for an ecologically sustainable future- trans-cultural views. The link shows an adaptation of results from a survey asking students to describe mangroves.

Education

Dr Lorraine Connell
Dr Lorraine Connell is a lecturer in Education and is the Teaching and Learning Champion for the School of Education. She has a Diploma of Teaching, a Bachelor of Education, a Masters of Education and a Doctor of Teaching. Her PhD thesis is - Extending the 4 walls of the classroom: a return to the classroom to affirm my assumption, values an dknowledge in practice.
Lorraine’s research and interests include:
- The profession of teaching
- The Arts in Education and the influence of the theory of multiple intelligence in teaching and learning
- Information technology and its use in teaching and learning
- On-line teaching and learning
- The recorder as a means of performance.
Health Sciences
Dr Deborah West
Dr Deborah West is Senior Lecturer and Coordinator in Welfare Studies and Social Work. She has a BA (Honours) from the University of Toronto, a MSW and PhD from Flinders University. After completing her social work training, Deborah worked as a social work practitioner in both the government and non-government sectors and as a policy officer in the Australian Government. As an academic Deborah has worked at Flinders University in the School of Social Administration and Social Work and at the Australian National University in the Sociology Department.
Deborah has worked on numerous research projects relating to the interface of information and communication technologies (ICT) with individuals and communities. She is particularly interested in role of ICT in meeting the psycho-social needs of individuals and communities. Two current research projects include work on client participation in the governance of human service organisations and psycho-social factors that impact on disaster management and community recovery. She has published extensively in the field of information and communication technology.
Deborah has strong links in the human service industry which provide many opportunities for collaborative work and teaching. She serves on a range of boards and committees at both the national and territory level.
Science & Primary Industries
Dr Sean Cox
Sean Cox was appointed to the position of Lecturer in the School of Science and Primary Industry at CDU in January 2004. He has a BSc in applied chemistry and microbiology from the University of South Australia, a PhD in biology from the University of Wollongong and lectures in general biology, genetics and cell & molecular biology at the undergraduate level.
Sean’s research interests focus on plant-microbial interactions, including the role of soil biotic factors in the suppression of plant pathogens and the antimicrobial properties of phytochemical compounds.
