Charles Darwin University has advanced on the list of the world’s best universities that are less than 50 years old – featuring for the fourth consecutive year.

The prestigious Times Higher Education “100 Under 50” list recognises the rising stars of higher education globally. CDU has risen 21 points from its place at 69 in 2014 to 48th place this year.

This is the fourth year Times Higher Education (THE) has released a list of the top 100 young universities and is the fourth time that CDU has claimed a place.

CDU Acting Vice-Chancellor Professor Sharon Bell said the global ranking was a great endorsement of the quality and excellence of research programs at the university.

“This consolidates our place in the middle of the list,” Professor Bell said.

“The challenge for CDU as a small regional university is to maintain its ranking in the fiercely competitive international system.”

CDU was one of 16 Australian universities to feature on the list this year.

The THE 100 Under 50 Rankings complement the annual THE World University Rankings by listing the world’s top 100 universities under the age of 50.

It uses the same 13 performance indicators to determine rankings in the “100 Under 50” list, including research volume, income and reputation; citations; the learning environment and international outlook.

The single largest indicator, citations, examines a university’s research influence by capturing the number of times its published works are cited by scholars around the world.

The data is drawn from some 12,000 academic journals indexed by Thomson Reuters’ Web of Science database, and adjusted to reflect variations in citation volume between different subject areas.
