Charles Darwin University’s new Chinese in-country program has just completed its first course.

A group of 13 students from around Australia, including seven from CDU, received certificates of completion from Hainan University’s Deputy Vice-Chancellor in a special graduation ceremony held in December.

The in-country program was the first under a Memorandum of Understanding between CDU and Hainan University signed in mid 2009.

It is expected that the in-country program will be run from November to December each year to complement the three-year Chinese program at CDU's School of Creative Arts and Humanities.

Similar in-country programs in Indonesia and Greece complement the school's programs in Bahasa Indonesia and Modern Greek.

The NT Government supported the Chinese program by providing scholarships to all seven CDU students.

Since Haikou is a sister city of Darwin, the program also had the support of both cities. Darwin’s sister city committee funded a dinner for CDU students and their counterparts in Haikou. The Hainan students invited the Australians to an award-winning performance of local dance, and on a tour of the countryside, followed by a party and a demonstration of Hainan opera.
