What is engineering?

Engineers makes things happen. Engineering offers a world of excitement, challenges and interesting career opportunities. Engineering converts science and technology into successful innovation, providing the conditions for civilized living.

The work of engineers can be seen everywhere - in health, in our cities, in the country, in food supply and distribution, in medicine and in aerospace. Some examples are:

  • Advances in medical treatment, like pacemakers and surgical instruments which allow micro surgery
  • Robotics, enabling more effective and efficient production methods
  • Power supply systems for remote areas
  • Transport systems allowing people to move quickly within cities, within countries and between countries.

Engineering has a long tradition, with the work of engineers including the pyramids, many temples and historical buildings, roads and water supply systems, the steam engine and ships.

Engineers will create imaginative and visionary solutions to the challenges of the twenty first century. In the future engineers will be involved in improving living conditions for all people, making the environment in which we live a better place and developing better sources of energy.

Engineers:

  • Have the power to make a difference by solving problems that are important to society. Engineers control and prevent pollution, develop new energy sources and create advanced technologies
  • Have money and job security
  • Engineers are well paid and always in demand
  • Work with other talented people. Engineering is a team effort with experts in many different fields and from different backgrounds working together
  • Have lots of career options. Engineers work everywhere - in big cities and small towns, rural communities and remote areas, both indoors and outdoors. Engineers can develop their careers into research, medicine, law, business management and other areas
  • Turn fantasy into reality. Engineers will be involved in making all the wonders of the future a reality.

Engineering at Charles Darwin University

Charles Darwin University offers a range of engineering courses from undergraduate programs to PhD programs. In addition research is carried out into many different areas and a range of consulting services are available to industry.

While still covering the traditional areas of engineering study, our programs focus on the tropical environment and the Northern Territory, and encompass modern teaching methods such as team activities, project based learning and offer the opportunity to work with people from related disciplines such as architecture, mathematics and physics.

Where possible, there is an emphasis on "hands-on" practical learning, through classes, site visits and workshop experience. Undergraduate students are encouraged to present their work using oral presentations as well as written reports, thereby encouraging the early development of a professional approach to their work.

Graduate courses are available both through research and class work, covering developments of the axial flux electric motor initially used in the Desert Rose solar car, and branching into other areas such as oil and gas and renewable energy.

Courses

A suite of diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses are offered in engineering. More information can be found at diploma courses in engineering, bachelor of engineering courses, master of engineering courses and postgraduate research degrees.
