Key Forum Report Garma 2008

The Key Forum Report, compiled by Christine Fletcher, Senior Research Fellow, Charles Darwin University, summarises the main points of debate that emerged from the Garma 2008 Key Forum. It explores the policy issues that arose and articulates recommendations that can be, and are being, used to stimulate and inform actions.

This report provides an account of the issues discussed at the 2008 Garma Key Forum on Indigenous Knowledge: Caring for Culture and Country. The Forum looked closely at the significance, depth and value of traditional Indigenous knowledge and how vital it is for social cohesion, cultural identity, community and personal development and the maximising of sustainable economic opportunities for Yolngu and other Indigenous Australians.

The presentations and dialogue emphasised the importance of culture and country to Indigenous Australians and that, when addressed by our education system, our health system and our economic system, positive results can be, and are being, achieved.
