Key Forum Report Garma 2009

The Key Forum Report, compiled by Christine Fletcher, Senior Research Fellow, Charles Darwin University, summarises the main points of debate that emerged from the Garma 2009 Key Forum. It explores the policy issues that arose and articulates recommendations that can be, and are being, used to stimulate and inform actions.

Since its inception 11 years ago, the Garma Key Forum has recognised that Indigenous knowledge systems and cultural differences between contemporary Australian society and traditional Indigenous societies are the foundations for building the two-way partnerships that we all depend upon.

Recognising the value of traditional Indigenous culture forms the principles of the Garma Key Forum and, in 2009, creative partnerships emerged as the essence of the Key Forum theme of Indigenous Creative Industries. This report illustrates the importance of nurturing partnerships in all areas and across all sectors, including education, technology, the arts, and economic development.

Indeed, in large part, the success of the Garma Key Forum is the enduring partnerships between Charles Darwin University, the Yothu Yindi Foundation, and Yolŋu. These partnerships contribute to the framework of the Key Forum from very different dimensions which, when combined, mix traditional Indigenous and academic perspectives to achieve maximum outcomes.

This year was no exception, not only in the flourishing cross-cultural exchange and understanding but in tangible outcomes, such as real offers of individual employment and new networks for artists and corporate sponsors. In keeping with the Garma tradition, the most exciting outcomes for participants are the opportunities that arise from extending social and economic networks and expanding entrepreneurial skills.
