Creative Tropical City Report launched

26 March 2009

For the past 3 years researchers from Charles Darwin University, the University of Wollongong and the University of South Australia have participated in mapping Darwin’s creative industries.  The project was funded through the Australian Research Council Linkage Project Scheme and jointly supported by Darwin City Council, Tourism NT and the Northern Territory Government’s Department of the Chief Minister and Department of Natural Resources, Environment and the Arts.

The aims of the project were specifically to:

  • determine the nature, extent and change over time of the creative industries in Darwin
  • interrogate the applicability of national and international creative industry policy frameworks to Darwin, and
  • identify opportunities for transformation in the creative industries in Darwin.

Creative industries are classified as ‘businesses that are founded in creativity and knowledge innovation such as marketing, advertising and film’.

The report shows the need for the Territory to harness the creative capital that is already here and to nurture this industry to entice others and outlines creative ‘hotpsots’ in Darwin City.

A Creative Tropical City exhibition was held at the Northern Territory Library during February 2009.
