Previous Agreement

On 1 July 2003, then Vice-Chancellor Ken McKinnon and Chief Minister Clare Martin signed a landmark Partnership Agreement in recognition of the importance of Government to the viability and relevance of the University and the importance of the University in building independent resident capacity that can underpin the Territory’s future.

In the period 1 July 2003 to 30 June 2006, the Partnership Agreement produced significant outcomes, notably the:

  • National Accelerated Literacy Program, which secured $8.6 million in Commonwealth funding to develop and implement a methodology for English literacy teaching;
  • Broadband link between the Desert Knowledge Precinct and Alice Springs city centre, made possible by a Commonwealth Government contribution of $1.75 million;
  • Establishment of a bioscience facility (Bioscience North Australia) to enable research, innovation and commercial development in molecular biology and related fields; and
  • Creation of the Graduate School for Health Practice, which offers collaborative learning across the full range of clinical health settings – acute, urban community and remote.

In addition to these tangible outcomes, the Partnership Agreement provided a forum for creating and realising synergies; sharing information, infrastructure and resources; and collaborative approaches to education, research, policy development and program delivery.
