Academic dress
Academic Dress Rules as approved by Council at meeting 1/2001 on 24 February 2001 and amended by the Executive Committee, on behalf of Council on 14 March 2001.

1. Citation
These Rules may be cited as the Charles Darwin University (Academic Dress) Rules.
2. Entitlement to Academic Dress
The persons entitled to academic dress in accordance with these Rules are:
- the Chancellor
- the Deputy Chancellor
- the Vice-Chancellor
- other members of Council
- persons holding any of the following degrees or other awards of the university:
- a degree of Doctor (including a degree of Doctor of Philosophy)
- a degree of Master
- a degree of Bachelor
- a Diploma
- an Associate Diploma/Certificate IV
The academic dress to which a person is entitled is that described in the Rule referring in its heading to the person, or as the case requires, the person's degree or other award.
3. Chancellor
Gown of black pure wool with facings and square collar of the same material. Facings lined with ochre silk and trimmed with gold lace. Sleeves embroidered with University logo on upper sleeve and trimmed on lower sleeve with gold lace and ornaments. Hem trimmed with gold lace.
Black velvet trencher with gold tassel and edged with gold lace.
4. Deputy Chancellor
Gown of black pure wool with facings and square collar of the same material. Facings lined with ochre silk and trimmed with gold lace. Sleeves embroidered with University logo on upper sleeve and trimmed on lower sleeve with gold lace. Black velvet trencher with gold tassel.
5. Vice-Chancellor
Gown of black pure wool with facings and square collar of the same material. Facings lined with ochre silk and trimmed with silver lace. Sleeves embroidered with University logo on upper sleeve and trimmed on lower sleeve with silver lace.
Black velvet trencher with silver tassel and trimmed with silver lace.
6. Members of Council (other than Chancellor, Deputy Chancellor and Vice Chancellor)
The style of academic dress (if any) to which the member is entitled, or black pure wool gown of the Cambridge doctoral pattern with facings of ochre and white and sleeve linings of ochre. Sleeves held by white button and cord.
7. Degree of Doctor (other than Degree of Doctor of Philosophy)
Festal gown of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge doctoral pattern with 10cm facings and sleeve linings of the relevant award colour specified in rule 14.
Black velvet bonnet with silver cord and tassel.
Hood of scarlet cloth of the Cambridge pattern lined with silk of the relevant award colour specified in rule 14.
8. Degree of Doctor of Philosophy
Festal gown of claret stuff cloth of the Cambridge doctoral pattern faced with cream silk 10cm wide.
Black velvet bonnet with cream cord and tassel.
Hood of black cloth of the Cambridge pattern lined with claret silk and edged with cream silk 5cm wide.
9. Degree of Master
Black stuff gown of the Cambridge masters pattern.
Black trencher with black tassel.
Hood of the Cambridge shape fully lined with the relevant award colour specified in rule 14, and further edged with white silk 5cm wide.
10. Degree of Bachelor, Graduate Certificate and Graduate Diploma
Black stuff gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.
Black trencher with black tassel.
Hood of the Cambridge pattern faced with 10cm wide silk of the relevant award colour specified in rule 14.
11. Diploma / Advanced Diploma / Associate Degree
Black stuff gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.
Full length stole, lined with black and centre trimmed with red strip.
12. Associate Diploma / Certificate IV
Black stuff gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.
Stole: Full length stole, lined with red.
13. Certificates other than Certificate IV, Advanced Certificate
Black stuff gown of the Cambridge bachelor pattern.
14. Colours
Colours are allocated to groups of awards in cognate areas which form a broad field of study, as follows:
