Overview
The Australian Government has announced a package of Higher Education Reforms effective from 1 January 2005. The changes apply to higher education students only; VET students will not be affected.
Students will not experience many changes after 2004, as they will continue to pay Government-set HECS fees until 31 December 2008.
- The HECS repayment threshold will be lifted to $35,000 in 2004/2005 and $36,184 in 2005/2006. This repayment threshold will apply to all continuing and commencing students in a course of study.
- From 2005, all domestic students will receive a seven-year 'learning entitlement'. After seven years, students move onto a full fee-paying basis unless they are deemed to be eligible for an additional entitlement on the basis of the course they are undertaking.
Detailed information for current students is available at the Going to uni website.
