Unit Fees
Fees are charged according to the units a student chooses to enrol in.
Fees for 2008 were published on 1 October 2007.

2008 fees will apply to any students who:
- Continues in a course of study and enrols in units within any teaching periods in 2008; or
- Commences a course of study in either semester 1, 2 or summer, 2008 and enrols in units within any teaching periods.
Each unit has five fee levels attached to them depending on the category a student considers themself to be in. Categories are normally assigned at the time of enrolment.

Pre-97, pre-2005, pre-2008 and 2008 fees apply only to students who are considered to be Commonwealth Supported, and must meet one of the following residency requirements:

Australian citizens
-
New Zealand citizens – residing in Australia during the relevant semester or teaching period
-
Permanent residents – residing in Australia during the relevant semester or teaching period.
Special note:
- New Zealand citizens and Permanent Residents (non-humanitarian visa holders) residing in Australia whilst undertaking a unit of study within a course will be charged the full band rate (i.e. are not eligible for any HECS-HELP programs or a discount)
- New Zealand citizens and Permanent Residents (non-humanitarian visa holders) residing outside Australia whilst undertaking a unit of study within a course will be charged the full tuition rate (i.e. are not eligible for any HECS-HELP programs or a discount), as by living overseas they are no longer considered a Commonwealth Supported Student.
1. Pre-97 fees (for ex non-differential HECS students)
Pre-1997 students retain this student status until 31.12.2008 - after that date their fees will be the same as students commencing a course in 2009.
Pre-1997 students will have to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria for being a pre-2005 student (further information will be made available to students prior to 31.12.2008).
2. Pre-2005 fees (for ex-differential HECS students)
Students who, before 1 January 2005, commenced a course of study as contributing students, are to be treated as pre-2005 HECS students if they have not discontinued their enrolment in the course since that commencement or completed the requirements for the course.
Pre-2005 students will have to demonstrate that they meet the eligibility criteria for being a pre-2008 student (further information will be made available to students prior to 31.12.2008).
Students are not taken to have discontinued their enrolment if they have:
- taken a leave of absence with written approval from the University;
- transferred into another course of study at the same level (i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate level) with the same provider or another provider;
- enrolled in a cross-institutional programme at a host provider;
- enrolled in an honours course of study after having completed the related pass course;
- in 2004, undertaken an enabling course as an exempt student and, the following year, enrolled in the course of study to which the enabling course relates as a Commonwealth supported student; or
- enrolled in a course of study after completing the requirements of a ‘qualifying or preliminary’ course of study at the same level (i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate level). This provision only applies to students who commenced their ‘qualifying or preliminary’ course of study after 1996.
3. Pre-2008 Commonwealth Supported Student fee
Students who, before 1 January 2008, commenced a course of study as ‘contributing’ students, are to be treated as pre-2008 HECS students if they have not discontinued their enrolment in the course since that commencement or completed the requirements for the course.
Pre-2008 students retain this student status until 31.1.2012 - after that date their fees will be the same as students commencing a course in 2013.
Students are not taken to have discontinued their enrolment if they have:
- taken a leave of absence with written approval from the University;
- transferred in 2008 into another course of study at the same level (i.e. undergraduate or postgraduate level) with the same provider or another provider;
- enrolled in a cross-institutional programme at a host provider;
- enrolled in an honours course of study in 2008 after having completed the related pass course in 2007;
- or in 2007, undertaken an enabling course as an exempt student and, the following year, enrolled in the course of study to which the enabling course relates as a Commonwealth supported student.
4. 2008 Commonwealth Support Student fee
Students must meet residency requirements to be considered Commonwealth Supported.
Note: Unless students are assessed to be either a Pre-2008, Pre-2005 or Pre-97 student, these fees are applicable to all Commonwealth supported students commencing an undergraduate course and selected postgraduate by coursework programs in 2008.
In accordance with the Higher Education Act 2003, from 2005 onwards, all universities are required to set student fees for Commonwealth Supported Students.
The Commonwealth contributes some, but not all funding to provide teaching and facilities for this group of students, and universities are expected to collect fees for the remainder. Universities cannot increase their fees by more than 25%.

5. 2008 Domestic Tuition Fee
These fees are for domestic higher education undergraduate and postgraduate by coursework students without a Commonwealth Supported Place.
They apply to the following groups of students:
- Postgraduate students who, in 2008, or prior to 2008 were enrolled as full-fee paying students in a postgraduate by coursework course
- Postgraduate students who, in 2008, are commencing studies in a fee-paying postgraduate by coursework course
- Domestic undergraduate students that are studying an undergraduate course without a Commonwealth Supported Place
- Students enrolling in a miscellaneous course (course code MISC)
- New Zealand citizens and permanent residents (non-humanitarian visa holders) residing outside Australia whilst undertaking a unit of study within a course.
