Units
A unit is a set amount of academic work often characterised by a set of lectures, tutorials, workshops and other teaching and learning sessions.

Units which make up a course of study are also classified as:
Core units
Compulsory fundamental principles and knowledge within the course of study.
Specialist electives
Material that is desirable for study within the course of study and needed for specialisation.
Electives
Material that may or may not be directly relevant to the field of study underlying the course of study, but are relevant to study generally.
Independent
Content and structure agreed by a student and the staff member responsible for the course of study of which it is intended to be a part.
Internal units
(Marked I)
Internal units of study for which the student is enrolled are undertaken
through attendance at the institution on a regular basis; or where the student
is undertaking a higher degree course for which regular attendance is not
required, but attends the institution on an agreed schedule for the purposes
of supervision and/or instruction.
Units are taught either at a campus or other teaching location. Attendance is scheduled at regular or irregular times. A unit timetable is available prior to classes commencing on the University website.
External units
(Marked E)
Units of study for which the
student is enrolled involve special arrangements whereby lesson materials, assignments, etc. are delivered to the student, and any associated attendance
at the institution is of an incidental, irregular, special or voluntary
nature.
Attendance on campus is not required. Depending on the unit, students will either be sent written material, and/or be given access to on-line facilities (called Learnline).
Please note that unit descriptions are being added to all units and will become available on the website progressively. It is the student's responsibility to check his/her course details to ensure they choose relevant units for their enrolment, but also to ensure they meet prerequisites for units.
