About IAS

Five years ago, the small size of Charles Darwin University permitted only a few significant clusters of researchers in the faculuties, in the areas of environmental science, education, health, and history and politics.

The creation of the IAS in 2004 aimed to overcome this problem of scale. Significant progress was initially made by the School for Social Policy and Research, which grew rapidly in its first year from a staff of three in 2004 to 33 in 2005.

At the time, Menzies School of Health Research had a 20-year history, while the School for Environmental Research grew slowly and the Graduate School for Health Practice formed a partnership with NT Government that continues to this day.

Today, the School of Social Policy and Research undertakes scholarly and on-the-ground research aimed at solving the complex issues confronting communities in northern and remote Australia and surrounding regions.

Menzies School of Health Research has been conducting ground-breaking research for almost 25 years and today, is Australia's leader in Indigenous and tropical health research.

The School for Environmental Research focuses on the sustainability of interactions between humans and the environment, and plays a significant role in assisting the development of livelihoods based on natural resources, particularly for remote and rural communities.

The Graduate School for Health Practice is a joint initiative between Charles Darwin University (CDU) and the Northern Territory Department for Health and Families (DHF) to promote education and applied research that improves the quality of health care.
