1.1 Alarm systems

When alarm bells sound, prepare to leave the building.

When the WHOOP WHOOP alert sounds, immediately leave the building.

The alarms are set off automatically by the triggering of a smoke or temperature-sensitive detectors. Fire wardens will then go through their areas of the buildings. Please obey their requests immediately. Appropriate staff will have been notified and the fire brigade is called automatically; the corridor doors (fire doors) close automatically.

When the alarms sound:

  • Evacuate building immediately by nearest safety exit or as directed by your fire warden
  • Go to you designated assembly point
  • Wait until a fire brigade officer or your building warden tells you can leave the assembly point.

1.2 Fire and fire-fighting devices

The fire brigade is alerted by the Institute's automatic alarm systems.

The building warden or the deputy building warden must meet the firemen when they arrive in the foyer. As soon as possible inform the University Security on extension 6500. Try to put out minor fires, but do not take personal risks.

Each building also has fire hoses in them.

1.4 Evacuation of building

When the alarms sound, all occupants must leave the building as quickly and as safely as possible. The following points should be observed during an evacuation.

Personnel must leave the building by the nearest safe exit (not necessarily the main entrance or the closest). Exits are clearly identified by EXIT signs in white on green background.

  • Lifts must not be used during an evacuation
  • Occupants must leave the buildings when directed to do so by the wardens or the floor wardens
  • Evacuees must congregate at the assembly area for the building or as directed at the time of the emergency
  • Do not re-enter the building while the alarms continue to sound, and wait until informed by a warden that it is safe to do so
  • Logic and common sense should prevail.

All staff, students and visitors are requested to adhere to these points during practice evacuations in order for the wardens to assess the procedures.

Outside normal working hours (1621-0800 weekdays, weekends, and public holidays) building/floor wardens more likely will not be available. If alarms sound during these periods, wardens in the building (if any) and the security officer will endeavour to ensure that all personnel leave the building.
