What is a student computer account?
Your student computer account is the username and password you use to gain access to various information services provided by Charles Darwin University, including:
- Accessing computing lab PC's (to research and complete assignments, or if the units you are taking are taught in the labs)
- Accessing the Internet from the PC labs or library
- Accessing your student email account
- Accessing Learnline
- Accessing the library databases and receiving notices about overdue books from the library
- Accessing MyStudentInfo, your online student information from the Callista Student Management System.
How do I activate my student computer account?
Activate your account through My computer account. You can activate your account by entering your student number at 'Check and Activate/Update Your Online Services'. If you need assistance contact ITMS Service Desk on 8946 6600.
Internet access for students less than 18 years old.
Should you be studying at the university and under 18 years of age, you will need to provide formal approval of a parent or guardian before you can access the internet from CDU computers. Fill out the approval form (.pdf) and return it to ITMS Service Desk, Red 3, Casuarina campus. Without this approval you will be able to use CDU computers and access CDU online resources but you will not be able to access the internet.
What do I need to have to activate my student account?
You can activate your student account if you have a current enrolment to study in the current semester.
Important note for students under the age of 18: Should you be studying at the university and under 18 years of age, you will need to provide formal approval of a parent or guardian before you can access the internet from CDU computers. Fill out the approval form (.pdf) and return it to ITMS Service Desk, Red 3, Casuarina campus. Without this approval you will be able to use CDU computers and access CDU online resources but you will not be able to access the internet.
Note: You will need Adobe Acrobat Reader to view pdf files. Get Adobe Acrobat reader.
Where can I go to activate my student account?
You can activate your account from any Internet access point. Your home or work Internet connection will be fine, or any of the free Internet access points provided on Charles Darwin University campuses.
Access points include the 'kiosk' machines, most of which are in the Information Centre, and any of the computers in the General Purpose Computing Laboratories. Use the username 'kiosk' and the password 'cdukiosk'. This is a general access computer account and will do nothing more than open a web-browser for you to use.
What happens if I change my name?
Your computer account is created
using the name in the Student System at the time of
creation.
If you change your name you should do the
following:
1. Advise Student Services of your name change.
They will update the Student System and the name on
your computer account will automatically update.
2.
Consider changing your email address and contact ITMS if
you want to change it (using the "Contact Suport Desk"
link at the left of this page).
You have 2 CDU email
addresses as follows:
- s<Student Number>@students.cdu.edu.au,
example
s000000@students.cdu.edu.au
- firstName.lastName<#>@students.cdu.edu.au, example james.bond2@students.cdu.edu.au (there may be a number after your name if it is already in use by someone else).
The 1st of these isn't affected when you change your name. The 2nd obviously is, however your email address will not change automatically as:
- you may choose not to change it if you have a lot of contacts with your old email address
- you may want to advise all your contacts of a new address before the change occurs.
Please note: Unless you contact ITMS and change your email address, you will not receive email sent to yourNewFirstName.yourNewLastName@students.cdu.edu.au
Internet usage
As per University Policies, By-Laws, and Federal Legislation, the University monitors internet usage by both staff and students to limit inappropriate use. Examples of such inappropriate use include:
- pornographic material
- peer-to-peer traffic such as Bittorrent, and including applications such as Limewire, Azureus, uTorrent, Emule, or Shareaza
- excessive levels of downloaded files, due to either direct downloading or excessive use of streaming sites such as YouTube or GoogleVideo.
Furthermore, if other types of inappropriate use are reported, the Dean of your faculty may request an audit of your internet and email usage. Other examples of inappropriate behaviour include harassing or abusive email messages to fellow students or staff.
You are responsible for the activity associated with your internet account. If you are found to be responsible for inappropriate use of the internet without justification, your internet account will be suspended/terminated pending review by the Dean of your faculty and the Director of Information Technology Management and Support.
Quota system on student home drives
Please be advised that the quota system has been re-introduced on student home drives. Technical issues resulted in ITMS disabling the previous quota system set at 100MB including email for students.
The new system provides 200MB for file storage and an additional 200MB for mail. Any student requiring more than 200MB is encouraged to contact ITMS Service Desk on 8946 6600 or itms-support@mail.cdu.edu.au.
Unfortunately quotas are required to restrain a small minority who are abusing the University storage systems and adversely impacting the provision of services for all students.
| Student File Quota: | 200MB | Student Mail Quota: | 200MB |
| Post Graduate File Quota: | 500MB | Post Graduate Mail Quota: | 200MB |
Please note: File and mail systems are separate and the quota is not transferable between them.
