Law courses and programs

Studying law at Charles Darwin University offers you a nationally recognised degree leading to professional admission as a practicing lawyer in Australia. We have a reputation locally and Australia-wide for the quality of our courses and teaching. Our small classes and easy access to lecturers offer you a supportive and stimulating study environment.

You can choose to study law as a single discipline or in combined degree programs with the Bachelor of Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander Studies, Arts, Business, Economics, Information Technology and Science. It is also possible to do the Bachelor of Law externally. With on-line access to audiotapes of all lectures as well as on-line tutorial assistance, the external programs enable you to complete the course from where ever you are in the world.

Entry program

If you are an Indigenous Australian or a Torres Straight Islander and you would like to enter the world of law, the Indigenous Pre-Law, Business and Arts program is for you. We assess your workplace experience and academic ability to see if the program suits you. Once you have made it through the assessment, you can start the course.

The course consists of a series of lectures that students will undertake in the first year of studies in Law. At the moment this is Legal Process, Research and Writing and Introduction to Public Law. However, this may change from year to year.

Undergraduate programs

*This course is for cross-institutional students only. A cross institutional student is one who is enrolled in part of a course or a unit conducted by the university in order to satisfy requirements of an award, which the student is undertaking at another tertiary institution (referred to as the home institution). This course is for re-enrolling students only and not available to new students.

Career opportunities

Studying law does not mean you are restricted to a career as a solicitor or barrister. You can enter these professions if you choose to, but a law degree opens up a whole range of possibilities. Examples are working in in-house council of private or public institutions, teaching, industrial relations, military and police services and politics.
