Plan for success

Before you enrol into the Tertiary Enabling Program, take some time to plan your study to ensure that the enrolment decisions you make will set you up for success.

Decision 1.   How much time do you have?

The first factor to consider when planning your study is; ‘How much time do you have for study?’

You may wish to plot your commitments on a weekly calendar.xlsx to help you calculate your available study time. The table below also outlines some time factors that you may wish to consider.

Some time factors to consider:

How many hours do I work? Do I need to account for overtime?
How much time is spent travelling to and from work?
How much time do I need to commit to my family and children’s needs?
Sporting commitments?
Social commitments?
How much time do I need to take for myself?
What other commitments do I have each week?
Can I change my commitments to accommodate more study time?
How many hours can I realistically commit to study each week?

Decision 2.   Full Time or Part Time study?

1 unit = 10 hours study per week

Part Time Study

Full Time Study
1 or 2 units a semester 3 or 4 units a semester
10 to 20 hours per week 30 to 40 hours per week
Recommended if you are working full time or if you have not studied for a while. Not recommended if you are working full time or at home with young children.

Decision 3.  Your Study Mode

Internal Study

External Study (online) Mixed Study Mode
  • Internal Study is available at  Alice Springs and Casuarina Campuses.
  • Students can choose to study some units internally and others externally based on their individual needs.
  • each unit requires between 3 to 6 hours of class time per week.
  • External study is more flexible and students can choose to study at times that suit their needs.

  • 80% attendance is required to pass.
  • Ideal if you are working full time and are unable to attend classes.

  • Class sizes are limited so internal classes can not be guaranteed.
  • When you choose to study externally it is assumed that you have some computing skills.

Class times vary and you can view the timetable at http://www.cdu.edu.au/lba/all/programs/tep-timetable.html.

Decision 4.  Choosing your units
