Welcome to the Northern Territory University School of Law website and the Law School. 

The Law School was established in 1989.  It was supported in its formative years by the University of Queensland, offering the degree programs of that University until 1991.  In the ensuing years the Law School has developed a strong reputation for the quality of its teaching and for its innovative programs.

The Law School provides a solid theoretical and practical general legal education that well prepares students for professional practice.  It is committed to maintaining high academic standards and values.  The School has maintained close contact with members of the practising legal profession.  Members of the profession and judiciary have made a significant contribution to the development of the law courses.  Further, their continuing involvement in the teaching programs, including skills units such as advocacy, client interviewing and negotiation and mediation, adds an important dimension to the legal education of our students.

The location of the Law School on the doorstep of Asia [geographically, Darwin is considerably closer to Indonesia than it is to any of the State capitals of Australia], and in a Territory in which indigenous people comprise one-third of the total population, gives special significance and impetus to the Law School's particular interest in teaching and research in relation to Asian and comparative law and legal issues pertaining to indigenous peoples.  The School offers a pre-law program in order to attract and assist indigenous students.

Graduates of the NTU Law School are now making their mark, not only within Australia, but also overseas.  The Law School has every confidence that their influence and contribution to the development of the law will continue to grow.
