Darwin Permaculture Design Course 2-14 July 2012

Join us for two weeks of interactive learning on Permaculture Design and Principals. Course includes field trips, practical hands-on experience, theory, design, discussion slideshows & films.

When: Monday, 2 July – Saturday, 14 July 2012

Bumble Bee Workshop #2

Join us for Bumble Bee Workshop #2! The winds have changed, the temperatures have cooled and the top end is in its serious food production season. Come down to Lakeside Drive Community Garden and we will share some ideas about making the most of the coming Dry. Bumble Bee Workshop Session 2 will include training on: Worms, Seed Propagation, Irrigation and building a Mosaic garden path.

Fogg Dam Field Day 2012

Fogg Dam Conservation Reserve would like to invite you to their 2012 Field Day on Sunday, April 29, 8am to 2pm.

Enjoy guided walks to see native plants, butterflies and birds; talks on Fogg Dam animals and living in the Tropics. Kids can enjoy stories, treasure hunts and water discovery. There will be a sausage sizzle, hot dogs and prizes!

Free bus leaves Palmerston: 9.30 am Bay N
Free bus leaves Fogg Dam: 1.30 pm

*Please bring drinking water, a hat & insect repellent with you!

Join us for LDCG’s first Bumble Bee Workshop for 2012! As the Wet begins to wind down Lakeside Drive Community Garden will host a range of workshops that will help members kick-start this year’s gardens. Bumble Bee Workshop Session 1 will include training on: Composting, Holistic alternatives to managing Termites, Easy No-Dig Gardens and Artsy Garden Sculptures.

CDU Closed Wednesday 14 March

Casuarina and Palmerston campuses are closed on Wednesday 14 March due to extreme weather. please do not go into the Community Garden for any reason until you have been notified by CDU staff that it has been deemed safe to return. Continue to monitor CDU’s website for updates.

Cyclone Warning

Cyclone Warning. Dear LDCG Members – please be aware that BOM has issued an advice that a Cyclone Warning is still in place. Please be alert to the possibility of closure of CDU’s Casuarina campus.

In the event of a cyclone or campus closure please do not go into the Community Garden for any reason until you have been notified by CDU staff that it has been deemed safe to return.

This particular plum is colloquially known as a billy goat plum, Terminalia ferdinandiana (or firm terd in some circles). ]It holds 50 times as much vitamin C as an orange grown along the Murray, grows abundantly in Northern Australia and can found in all suburbs of Darwin. It is unseasonally ready along the margins of Lakeside, easily dried and stored thus making it a welcome contribution to anyone’s cyclone kit.

February 2012 News Bulletin

Dear Friends,

The last few weeks we have been unconventionally dry with very little rain, but unlike the middle months of the year where the cool winds come from the dry SE the northern monsoonal winds prevailed picking up air vapor from the warm ocean and blowing its hot breathe onshore. Our ‘ripped’ broad acre patch struggled with this condition with our sprouts sagging and those that survived looking largely stressed and traumatized from the experience and I’m uncertain if they will grow and mature into the cereals that we want them to be. But Alas! more seeds remain and sow we go on.

It seems to be that the collective willing for rain of ‘top enders’ has been strong and the monsoon has decided to reform threatening a tropical low right on our door step, be careful what you wish for. These heavy rains and wild winds cause native fruits to fall blanketing the ground below. I was riding my bike through the Casurina Coastal Reserve when an Emerald Dove rose silently and heavily, finding cover where it watches alertly, with its head bobbing to ensure eye contact as wind stirred with leaves and branches obscuring its view. This bird is often encountered at close range picking its way through the ground litter of the monsoonal vine forest and that day had been feasting on a carpet of Flueggea virosa berries which are a favored food of humans and animals alike. They are delicately small and sweet tasting especially when perfectly ripe. There I sat awhile at some distance, binocs in hand, and waited as many birds paid a visit some swallowing their fruit whole and others loading up take away undoubtedly to impatiently expecting squawking chicks. If you are ambling along and notice that a fruit tree is laden or has littered the ground with berries do take the time and wait to see what turns up for you never know who might be in the neighborhood.
