Databases and Online Journals - Help Page

Introduction

Databases are used to find articles in journals. Databases are either full text or bibliographic. The databases that contain some full text articles have a note on the webpage saying includes full text.

Bibliographic databases include a citation and sometimes an abstract. This means you have to look up the title of the journal on the CDU Library catalogue to see whether the library subscribes to that journal and holds that particular issue.

CDU Library subscribes to a range of Databases. This usually involves paying an annual fee, but for some Databases the costs are calculated on a per search basis.

The symbol indicates that the Database is Australian. Other databases often do include Australian content, but often only a small percentage.

Problems with access?

There could be a number of reasons why you are unable access a database.

  1. The number of simultaneous users has already reached the maximum. Many databases have a limit on the number of simultaneous users. Wait a while and try again.
  2. The database is inaccessible. Wait a while and try again. Most problems are temporary.
  3. It is worth trying a database from a different vendor. If you cannot access any databases, then it might be a problem with your firewall or cookies. Make sure you have enabled cookies because many databases require this.
  4. If you are accessing from a Government department, firewalls are often a problem, speak to your computer people. If you are accessing from home, speak to your internet provider.
  5. If the problem persists, you can contact us.
